Fleury was eventually traded to the Minnesota Wild on Mar. 21, 2022, for a conditional first-round pick.

Marc-Andre Fleury of the Toronto Maple Leafs comes to mind. According to reports, it nearly happened.

John Shannon of The Bob McCown Podcast claims that Toronto and the Chicago Blackhawks worked out a deal for Fleury’s acquisition in 2022. Brendan Shanahan, the president of the Maple Leafs, however, declined the transaction.

“A contract was in place for Kyle Dubas to purchase Marc-Andre Fleury. It was completed. It was finalised. Before Marc-Andre Fleury was transferred to Minnesota, they had the opportunity to acquire him from Chicago, but Brendan vetoed it.

“But there was a deal in place, and they just needed the rubber stamp endorsement from the president of the Toronto Maple Leafs for it to occur, and it did not occur.”

In exchange for Petr Mrazek, Matthew Knies, and “first-round picks,” the Maple Leafs apparently received Brandon Hagel and Fleury, according to TSN’s Darren Dreger.

During his post-trade deadline availability, Dubas expressed his dissatisfaction with the proposed deal’s leak to the media and chastised Blackhawks general manager Kyle Davidson for the information’s release.

The then-GM of the Maple Leafs stated, “I’m disappointed that that conversation is public.” “I’ve never had that before where these specifics like that have been made public and I think, frankly, it’s probably a conversation to ask Kyle Davidson on his availability, in Chicago.”

In response, Davidson told reporters at his own media availability that he would discuss the issue in private with Dubas.

Prior to the 2022 NHL Trade Deadline, Toronto completed three transactions. On February 19, 2022, they traded Nick Ritchie and a conditional second-round pick in 2025 for Ilya Lyubushkin and Ryan Dzingel.

They acquired Mark Giordano and Colin Blackwell for two second-round picks (2022 and 2023) and a third-round pick (2024) one day prior to the deadline. Defenseman Travis Dermott was traded by the Maple Leafs to the Vancouver Canucks in exchange for a third-round pick in 2022.

That year, Fleury was dealt to the Minnesota Wild. The Tampa Bay Lightning, who lost to the Colorado Avalanche in the Stanley Cup Finals, acquired Hagel.
