One of the best remaining free agents could end up joining New York.

There are still a few highly intriguing relievers in the free agent pool.

This winter, the free-agent bullpen market has proceeded very slowly. The relief market has been extraordinarily slow, but free agency has generally moved at a snail’s pace.

One of the busiest teams, the New York Yankees, are reportedly trying to strengthen their bullpen. While a few players have been connected to New York, some of its best alternatives have been passed over.

Héctor Neris and Wandy Peralta appeared to be headed to New York, but they have since signed elsewhere. Fortunately, the club still has access to other possibilities that could be able to help them.

Zachary Rymer of Bleacher Report has even identified the Yankees as the preferred destination for former San Diego Padres, Cleveland Guardians, and Houston Astros pitcher Phil Maton.

“Any guy who can finish a year with a whiff rate in the 90th percentile and a hard-hit rate in the 100th percentile deserves some measure of attention,” Rymer stated. “Despite the platoon split, he was essentially one of the most dominant pitchers in MLB in terms of pitch-to-pitch performance. Whether Maton can still be useful may depend on how well his balls break.

“He might be better off throwing either or both of his curveballs more frequently because they are both nasty pitches. Name it ‘The Complete Junis,’ if you’d want. The Philadelphia Phillies, New York Yankees, and Texas Rangers are potential fits. Yankees are the predicted landing spot. According to Jon Heyman of the New York Post, Maton is one of the Yankees’ targets. The team has appeared committed to signing a reliever in recent weeks.”

Maton had an outstanding season with Houston, recording a 3.00 ERA in 68 games with a 74–25 strikeout–to–walk ratio. He is precisely the kind of pitcher who could strengthen the bullpen in New York.
