Updated:Alabama man quit and confirmed no to return again

According to people with knowledge of the matter who are not connected to the institution, Eli Gold, a longtime play-by-play commentator for Alabama football on radio who has been entertaining Crimson Tide fans for 35 years, will not be returning to the Crimson Tide Sports Network in the autumn of 2024.

Chris Stewart, who currently calls Alabama basketball plays on CTSN, will assume the position. He’ll probably continue to broadcast men’s basketball as well.

When contacted by The Tuscaloosa News on Wednesday, Gold declined to comment.

Jim Carabin, vice president and general manager of the Crimson Tide Sports Network, stated in a statement, “Eli has been an invaluable member of our broadcast team.”

“We appreciate all of his years of work and wish him well on his upcoming endeavours. Chris is a member of our current broadcast crew, so CTSN is lucky to have someone who can step up and take over this responsibility with ease.”

Since 1988, Gold, now seventy, has called Alabama football games. Before disclosing his cancer diagnosis 13 months ago, he missed the 2022 season. He resumed his regular position for Crimson Tide home games and the Iron Bowl in 2023. Stewart called 2023 road games and the postseason in place of Gold during the 2022 season.
