Kim English set to guide Providence in opener vs. Columbia

Providence College Head Coach Kim English has revealed that senior Jabri Abdur-Rahim, junior Wesley Cardet Jr., redshirt freshman Christ Essandoko, and junior Bensley Joseph have all signed athletic aid agreements to join Providence for the 2024-25 season.

Abdur-Rahim, a 6-8, 215-pound guard, has one year of eligibility remaining. He previously played for Virginia during the 2020-21 season, contributing to the team’s ACC regular season title and NCAA Tournament berth before transferring to Georgia for the past three years. Over four seasons, Abdur-Rahim participated in 101 games, averaging 8.0 points and 2.9 rebounds. He boasted an 83.6 percent free-throw shooting rate (240-287) and a 35.4 percent success rate from three-point range (141-398). During the 2023-24 season, he maintained an average of 12.2 points and 3.5 rebounds while shooting 35.6 percent from three-point territory (62-174) and 88.7 percent from the free-throw line. Abdur-Rahim reached double figures in scoring in 17 out of the 27 games he played, achieving 20 or more points on four occasions, including a career-high 34-point performance against Kentucky on January 20, 2024, where he shot 7-14 from three-point range. Abdur-Rahim graduated from Blair Academy in 2020 and earned the title of Gatorade Player of the Year for New Jersey in 2019.

English emphasized his familiarity with Abdur-Rahim’s playing style, having encountered him on multiple occasions in the past, including coaching against him and recruiting him during his high school years.

Regarding Wesley Cardet Jr., a guard standing at 6-6 and 210 pounds, English welcomed him to the Friars, noting the valuable insights provided by Cardet’s uncle, who served as his coach at Chicago State. English praised Cardet’s character and playing abilities.

Christ Essandoko, a 7-0, 290-pound center, brings three seasons of eligibility to Providence. English highlighted Essandoko’s suitability for the team’s playing style and his potential to strengthen their frontcourt presence.

Bensley Joseph, a 6-2, 196-pound guard, brings experience from his tenure at the University of Miami. English emphasized Joseph’s contributions to Miami’s success in reaching the Final Four and Elite Eight in previous seasons. He praised Joseph’s versatility and leadership qualities.

English expressed excitement about Joseph’s return to New England and his potential as a veteran leader for the team.
