Updated: Potential All-Star Date for Cubs Revealed

Report: Cubs expect reduced capacity at Wrigley to open 2021 season | theScore.com

When the Cubs might get to host the All-Star Game was disclosed by Rob Manfred.

The Chicago Cubs may soon break their tradition of hosting the MLB All-Star Game at Wrigley Field, which dates back more than 30 years.

Toronto and Chicago were mentioned as possible hosts of the 2027 and 2028 All-Star Games by MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred during his remarks this week.

The next three All-Star Games’ venues have already been decided. The Atlanta Braves at Truist Park in 2025, the Philadelphia Phillies at Citizens Bank Park in 2026, and the reigning champion Texas Rangers at Globe Life Field in 2024 will all host.

After that, it may finally be the Cubs’ turn.

Manfred still has two more All-Star Game locales to pick from. He has stated that he will step down as commissioner in 2029. He identified the Toronto Blue Jays and the Cubs as the two front-runners for 2027 and 2028 in a recent piece for The Athletic.

Manfred told The Athletic, “I am strongly influenced by two things with respect to those two years.” 1. When was the last time you played a game? When it comes to that factor, Toronto does fairly well. Chicago is older, in my opinion.”

Since the early 1990s, neither franchise has hosted the All-Star Game. The Cubs haven’t hosted since 1990, and the Blue Jays last did so in 1991.

The other significant factor, according to Manfred, is the city’s willingness to take action on those matters. “For the majority of the week, we require specific facilities and security support for our All-Star events.”

Chicago, the third-biggest city in the country, is prepared to host the Midsummer Classic. Since the competition’s inception in 1933, the Cubs have served as its hosts three times: in 1947, 1962, and 1990.

MLB consists of 30 teams, therefore the Cubs are officially overdue. While Manfred has done much in his time to alienate baseball fans, most of them would still be in favor of moving the All-Star Game to Wrigley Field.
