The Cairns Taipans are facing a setback as they hover just outside the top six, and a series of injuries leading up to a crucial double-header this week has added to their challenges. Last week, the team had to contend with the absence of Sam Waardenburg, who was sidelined due to a concussion sustained in a Round 14 defeat against the Tasmania JackJumpers. Additionally, Jonah Antonio was ruled out for the remainder of the season after suffering a torn right calf during a training session.

As if these setbacks weren’t enough, the team is now dealing with the absence of their Next Star player, Bobi Klintman, who is on the sidelines due to a flu outbreak within the club. The flu has affected several members of the team, including head coach Adam Forde.

Adam Forde expressed disappointment with the injury updates but remains optimistic about the rest of the team stepping up to fill the void. He emphasized the importance of not rushing Waardenburg’s recovery process and acknowledged the extended period Jonah Antonio will be sidelined with a calf tear.

While acknowledging the significance of Waardenburg and Antonio in the team’s rotation, Forde highlighted the team’s “next man up” mentality. Despite the challenges, he believes that the players are ready and willing to step in and contribute.

Looking ahead to the upcoming game on Thursday night, Forde indicated that Bobi Klintman is unlikely to play due to the flu outbreak. The Cairns Taipans, with a current record of 10-12, are navigating a season filled with both highs and lows, hoping to overcome these setbacks and make a push for a higher position in the standings.
