Thatcher Demko, the No. 1 goalie for the Vancouver Canucks, is anticipated to miss some time due to an injury.
The Vancouver Canucks are facing a setback as their top goaltender, Thatcher Demko, is expected to be sidelined in the short term due to an injury. This development has prompted the team to consider calling up Arturs Silovs from the Abbotsford Canucks to fill the void in the goalie position. Silovs, a 22-year-old netminder, has showcased his skills in the AHL with an impressive record of 15 wins, 11 losses, and 6 ties. He boasts a .907 save percentage and a 2.74 goals-against average, demonstrating his reliability between the pipes.
While Silovs has limited NHL experience, having participated in only five games, he has proven himself with three victories and a .908 save percentage. Notably, his inaugural NHL win occurred against the Philadelphia Flyers last season on February 18, 2023. In that game, Silovs made an outstanding 35 saves, leading the Canucks to a decisive 6-2 victory.
In the absence of Demko, Casey DeSmith is poised to take on a more significant role in the goaltending department. DeSmith, who has served as a reliable backup for Demko, has secured eight wins out of 19 games played. One noteworthy performance came against the Anaheim Ducks, where he made 17 crucial saves, contributing to the Canucks’ 2-1 triumph.
Despite the goaltending challenges, the Canucks find themselves in a favorable position within their division, holding a substantial ten-point lead over the Edmonton Oilers. This solid standing provides some reassurance to the team as they navigate through the temporary absence of Demko.
Ehlers set up the puck at the top of the crease, where Namestnikov deftly maneuvered between Nils Hoglander and Pius Suter to send a wrist shot glove side. Demko juggled the puck and reached to his left to grab it. He paused then, reaching to his hips and then his knee, and stood up carefully.
