UPDATED: Providence Basketball confirms exciting deal

No. 11 Providence faces No. 6 Kentucky in NCAA Tournament first round

With a commitment, Providence began the last weekend of the regular season.

A shooting guard from St. Louis who is almost done with his prep year, Nilavan Daniels, made a social media commitment to the Friars.

Daniels turned down offers from Navy and Maryville (Mo.) in favor of Providence, according to online recruiting site Verbal Commits. With Link Year Prep, a formidable Missouri squad that just competed at the National Prep Championship in Worcester, the 6-foot-3 talent is wrapping up his 2023–24 campaign. Daniels is a four-year graduate of Chaminade, a prestigious city school that produced well-known players like Jayson Tatum, a standout player for the Boston Celtics right now.

What’s going on, Friartown? Daniels made a late-night post on X on Friday. The official logos of the Big East and the school were shown at the top of the page, and he was wearing a white No. 12 jersey. Daniels participated in the Under Armour grassroots circuit with the Gateway Knights; in an attempt to generate more interest, he joined the program as late as May of the 2022–2023 season.

Daniels performed admirably in both of Link Year’s two games during this week’s three-day event, which was organized by Clark University. In a win over Fork Union, he finished with nine rebounds, five points, and five 3-pointers made. Daniels contributed two steals, four assists, ten rebounds, and five points in a 64-58 loss against Putnam Science, which included possible future teammate Oswin Erhunmwunse.

Providence scheduled their presence around its Tuesday away victory over Georgetown, with several staff members in attendance. The Friars have been practicing at home for Saturday night’s regular-season finale against Connecticut over the remainder of the week. Erhunmwunse, who is enrolled and playing with the current team, has already verbally committed to the 2025 class. Daniels will join Ryan Mela, an incoming small forward, and Anton Bonke, a center.

Daniels was a standout player at Chaminade, winning Player of the Year in the Metro Catholic Conference as a senior with an average of 18.8 points and seven rebounds. With almost 1,100 career points at the end, he set program marks for 3-pointers made in a single game, three-pointers made in a season, and lifetime 3-point shooting. Over the course of his four years, Daniels connected at a 52.9% rate from deep, including an even 50% as a senior.

On the periphery, the friars have been persistently looking for assistance. With 30 games played, their 33.3% long-range shooting ranks 211th in the country. Providence attempts 43.8% of its field goals from beyond the arc; even a few percentage points more effective shooting would ignite an attack that, in Kim English’s first season, has occasionally become stale.

The Friars expect at least two prospects to be present when they play the Huskies at Amica Mutual Pavilion. Jaylen Harrell, a Massachusetts-born 2025 wing guard, is in town for a formal visit. On his final six list are Xavier, a Big East opponent, Providence, Wake Forest, Alabama, and Virginia Tech. The 2025 center Tee Bartlett, a native of Nevada, has offers from the Musketeers, Arizona State, Kansas State, Mississippi State, and USC. The Friars will also leave tickets for him.
