Titans signs forward: I’m excited about the direction the team is taking.

David Fifita has made a surprising announcement, revealing that he has chosen to join the Gold Coast Titans after the Sydney Roosters reportedly withdrew their offer to him. Despite earlier indications that he was seeking opportunities in Sydney and was expected to sign with the Roosters, Fifita informed the Titans last week that he would be leaving at the end of the season. However, in a sudden turn of events, the Titans announced on Wednesday that Fifita had decided to stay with the team, agreeing to a two-year contract extension. Fifita expressed gratitude for the interest shown in him but stated that after careful consideration, he has decided to remain a Titan beyond 2024.

“I’m excited about the direction the team is taking and being close to home, and my family has been central to helping me make this decision.”

In a club statement, the Roosters said it had withdrawn their offer to Fifita after he allegedly expressed doubts about his decision to leave the Gold Coast.

“The Sydney Roosters have withdrawn their offer to David Fifita,” the club said.

“Despite his management making the initial approach to the club and Fifita personally informing the Sydney Roosters’ chairman and head coach of his intent to join the club last Thursday, Fifita has since expressed doubt about his decision.

“Consequently, the club has elected to withdraw its offer with view that it is in the Roosters’ best interests. The club wishes Fifita all the best.”

Signing Fifita had ruffled some feathers within the Bondi-based club, with Angus Crichton calling the decision to sign Fifita “interesting” and he may consider his future with another team.

Titans chief executive Steve Mitchell spoke to the media on Wednesday morning following the announcement, saying the club did not renegotiate their contract with Fifita.

He said Fifita had taken time to consider his future in the game and that was when he decided his best option was to remain a Titan.

“These guys have to make big decisions about a short career span,” Mitchell said.

“The week gave Dave a chance to actually process where he’ll be and what that means.

“His family is critical to him and that’s a really big part of it.

“His mum and grandmother come to the games and his family engage with all our club events.”
