Third Friar Player Enters the Transfer Portal- Forward Departs

Providence College’s basketball team is undergoing significant changes as several key players have decided to leave the program. Sophomore forward Rafael Castro has entered the transfer portal, making him the third player to depart from Coach Kim English’s team. Despite his modest statistical contributions of 2.8 points and 2.4 rebounds per game, Castro impressed with a 65% shooting percentage from the field, primarily serving as a backup to Josh Oduro.

Joining Castro in departing the team is Garwey Dual, a highly regarded recruit who recently entered the NCAA transfer portal. Dual, ranked No. 47 overall in the 2023 recruiting class, was considered one of Providence College’s most promising prospects.

Additionally, freshman Donovan Santoro has decided to leave the team after seeing limited minutes this season. These departures signal a period of transition for the Friars as they aim to regroup and rebuild their roster under Coach English’s guidance for the upcoming seasons.

The loss of Castro, Dual, and Santoro will undoubtedly impact the team’s depth and talent pool. Castro, despite his role as a backup, provided efficient scoring and rebounding, while Dual’s departure is a significant blow given his high ranking and potential. Santoro’s decision further complicates matters, as his departure adds to the team’s need to fill roster spots.

Moving forward, Coach English will need to focus on recruiting and developing players to fill the gaps left by these departures. Building a competitive team will be crucial as the Friars look to maintain their status in the competitive college basketball landscape. Coach English’s leadership will be tested as he navigates these changes and works to build a successful team for the future.
