Steelers Rumors: Russell Wilson and Justin Fields’ jersey numbers are revealed following trade

There may not be much longer to wait for those who have been excitedly awaiting the unveiling of Russell Wilson and Justin Fields’ Pittsburgh Steelers jerseys. Fields will wear No. 5 in the black and yellow uniform, while Wilson will wear his customary No. 3 with the Steelers, according to David Kaplan of ESPN 1000 in Chicago (which begins at 2:35).

Wilson’s number was expected because he had previously posted a video of himself opening several No. 3 Steelers jerseys with his last name after joining the team.

Throughout his professional career, Wilson has worn the No. 3 jersey. In college, he wore the No. 16 at Wisconsin and North Carolina State, but he changed it up when he was selected by the Seattle Seahawks in the third round of the 2012 NFL Draft.

Fields has used the No. 1 dating back to his time playing high school football in Kennesaw, Georgia. He kept it during his lone season at the University of Georgia in 2018 and after transferring to Ohio State in 2019. The Steelers are apparently particular about which numbers they give out.

Wide receiver George Pickens told the Arthur Moats Experience with Deke podcast (h/t Alex Kozora of Steelers Depot) in December 2022 he tried to get the No. 1, but the club declined because “I think it’s sacred or something like that.” Only four players in Steelers history who appeared in a game have ever worn the No. 1 jersey. Kicker Gary Anderson was the last person to use it from 1982 to ’94. Anthony Wright, who was the fourth-string quarterback as an undrafted rookie in 1999, is the last player on the roster who got the number. He never appeared in a game in his lone season with the club.
