Statement from Salford Red Devils boss about high-profile departures and if he thought about leaving the Super League team

Salford Red Devils: Paul Rowley concedes that discipline cost his team in defeat to former club Leigh

If there’s one Super League head coach who has faced significant challenges during the 2023/24 off-season, it’s Paul Rowley.

Rowley, who leads the Salford Red Devils, has seen his playoff aspirations shattered with key players like Brodie Croft, Andy Ackers (both from Leeds Rhinos), Ken Sio (Australia), and Joe Burgess (Hull KR) leaving the club.

It appears Rowley is essentially starting anew, but he’s embracing the difficulties along with the highs and lows that come with being a rugby league coach.

“It’s been a rollercoaster. Like rugby league, this pre-season has seen its highs and lows,” Rowley told League Express.

“The lows of the squad being dismantled were tough, but the highs of new arrivals and their commitment in pre-season, forming new bonds with players and strengthening existing relationships, have been exceptional.

“The energy and enthusiasm from our players have been truly inspiring, illustrating the ups and downs perfectly.”

For Rowley, the departures of Croft, Ackers, and Ken Sio were particularly challenging because they happened late in the pre-season.

“These exits were unexpected and came late in the process. Nobody likes unpleasant surprises, but you have to deal with them,” Rowley explained.

“Do you dwell on it or focus on the positives and move forward? I feel responsible for leading the way through this with the good people around me at the club. I focus on what I can control.”

When asked if he’s ever considered stepping down from his role at Salford due to the perennial challenges, Rowley remains resolute – and his success with the Red Devils is evident.

“Every day, the thought crosses my mind, but the relationships I’ve built with those around me make work enjoyable,” Rowley stated.

“I’m surrounded by an incredible group of talented and good-natured individuals, and that’s what motivates me to keep going.”
