Roosters - Little Miss Balloons

Merely a day following the revelation of Joey Manu’s probable move to rugby by year’s end, the Sydney Roosters have made public the decision to keep fellow center Billy Smith.

Smith, aged 24, successfully overcame his injury woes last season to secure a spot as a regular in the NRL. He has now agreed to a three-year contract extension with the club.

Sydney Roosters re-sign Billy Smith on long-term contract.

“I’ve frequently expressed my gratitude for the opportunity to play for the Sydney Roosters, and to have the assurance of being here for at least another three years is incredibly exciting for me,” Smith expressed.

Smith first played for the Tricolours in 2019 and has since participated in 27 NRL matches, 15 of which were in 2023.

“The club has consistently shown confidence in me, and I believe that my peak performance is yet to come,” Smith remarked.

“I’m eagerly anticipating what lies ahead and I’m excited to continue fulfilling my role within the team,” Smith expressed.

Smith will now continue to contribute to the Roosters’ talented backline until at least the conclusion of the 2027 season.

The center aims to build upon a promising previous year, during which he scored four tries and provided four assists, marking his most consistent run in the team to date.

Since debuting against rivals St George Illawarra in Round 23 five years ago, Smith has frequently battled serious injuries, limiting him to just three appearances the following year and seven in 2022.

“He embodies the spirit of Eastern Suburbs and his commitment to the team, as well as his resilience, is beyond question, so it’s fantastic to have Billy committed for another three years,” remarked head coach Trent Robinson.

“This contract extension reflects the relentless effort Billy demonstrates every day.”

Following the surprising news of Manu’s transition to rugby union, the reported retention of veteran Luke Keary on a one-year extension quickly followed.

Now that Smith has committed to another three years, Angus Crichton remains the most prominent player whose future remains uncertain.

As a representative for New South Wales and Australia, Crichton is currently open to negotiations with other clubs, as are players such as Daniel Tupou and Terrell May.
