West Ham news: Club hopeful of £40m deal for Premier League captain

  • David Moyes is set to hold talks with West Ham regarding a new contract
  • Moyes’ current deal expires at the end of the season and he is eager to stay

West Ham manager David Moyes has revealed that he is preparing to hold talks with the club’s board over a new contract.

Moyes’ current deal is set to expire at the end of the season and he is eager to extend his stay at West Ham following what he described as an ‘unbelievable’ 2023 for the club.

The highlight of the calendar year for the Hammers was undoubtedly winning the Europa Conference League as they lifted their first major trophy since 1980.

West Ham finished 2023 with a hugely impressive 2-0 win away to Arsenal, with Moyes’ side producing an excellent defensive display to move up to sixth place in the Premier League.

Commenting on his future, Moyes told Amazon Prime: ‘We’re getting ready to talk, I don’t think any of us are jumping to get it too quickly. I don’t see any problems.’

Moyes reflected on an excellent year for West Ham and also spoke highly of the players that arrived at the club in the summer, with those acquisitions ensuring that they weren’t too hard hit by Declan Rice’s departure to Arsenal.

Moyes said: ‘Football is played in many ways and today it was a brilliant defensive performance. Sometimes you have to watch how you play teams. We did a great job in keeping them from scoring.

‘This was the last game in 2023, it’s been an unbelievable year for West Ham. I think we sold one of the best players to Arsenal as well.

‘Probably all managers live or die by their recruitment. I think the new boys we’ve brought in, Kudus has been brilliant, Alvarez does a good defensive job for us.

Having initially managed the club between November 2017 and May 2018, Moyes returned to West Ham in December 2019.

Although he has received criticism from some West Ham supporters Moyes has largely been praised for his work, especially with his side progressing beyond the group stage in the Europa League.
