Revealed: Why Matt Whitley made St Helens move

Sam Tomkins, a former veteran of the Catalans Dragons, has given an explanation for Matt Whitley’s decision to move to St Helens after spending five years in the south of France.

Whitley is from St Helens, and he went home for the off-season after establishing himself as one of Super League’s most impressive second-rowers.

The 28-year-old made 103 appearances at the Stade Gilbert Brutus, scoring 35 tries, and was on the verge of earning England international status at Catalans under Steve McNamara.

But Tomkins has now revealed why he chose to join Saints, the team from which he was dismissed as a young player.

Tomkins stated on Sky Sports, “He is a St Helens lad; playing for St Helens would always be his dream.”

When he was younger, he attended the club and was let out. After joining Widnes, he had to undergo this difficult road in order to establish his credentials.

Over the past five years, he has demonstrated that he is a talented Super League player in France.

Everyone on your squad is thrilled with him because they all know he will score a seven or eight out of ten each and every week. You have to play with him before you can truly appreciate his talent.
