Mathieu Betts, the reigning Most Outstanding Defensive Player in the Canadian Football League (CFL), may soon be making a move to the NFL.

According to TSN’s Farhan Lalji, there’s a strong likelihood that Betts will sign a futures contract with the Detroit Lions in the NFL.

Lalji mentioned, “I’m hearing that there is a real possibility that Matthieu Betts will agree to a futures contract in the NFL with the Detroit Lions.” He clarified that the deal is not finalized yet, as Betts cannot sign until next week, but multiple sources have indicated that it’s trending in that direction.

CFL free agency is set to open on Tuesday.

Betts, who is 28 years old, made CFL history by becoming the single-season sack leader among Canadians, recording 18 sacks in 18 regular-season games for the BC Lions. This achievement surpassed previous record-holders Jamaal Westerman (2015) and former Lion Brent Johnson (2005). Betts also holds the Canadian record for the most sacks in a single season, surpassing his own record of 16 sacks from the previous year.

Beginning the season with a six-game sack streak, Betts ended the 2023 campaign with six more sacks than the next contenders, AC Leonard, Jake Ceresna, and Carter Bryce, securing the league crown.

A product of Laval University, Betts also achieved a career-high 42 defensive tackles and forced four fumbles, earning recognition as a CFL All-Star.
