Report: Indianapolis Colts Shine in 2024, but Special Teams Are a Concern

The Indianapolis Colts have emerged as one of the surprise contenders of the 2024 NFL season. Led by second-year quarterback Anthony Richardson, the team boasts a revitalized offense that combines explosive plays with a strong rushing attack spearheaded by a healthy Jonathan Taylor. Head coach Shane Steichen has built an innovative scheme that plays to Richardson’s dual-threat abilities while also leaning on a sturdy offensive line.

On the defensive side, the Colts have demonstrated resilience, ranking among the top units in takeaways. DeForest Buckner continues to anchor the defensive front, and young talents like Kwity Paye and Zaire Franklin have stepped up, making critical plays in key moments. With a 9-4 record, the Colts have positioned themselves as playoff contenders and a force in the AFC South.

However, while the offense and defense shine, special teams have emerged as a glaring concern. The Colts have struggled with inconsistent kicking and coverage units, which have directly impacted close games. Rookie kicker Lucas Havrisik, though promising, has missed several crucial field goals in clutch situations. Meanwhile, the punt and kick return coverage units have allowed opponents favorable field position too often. These issues were evident in narrow losses to division rivals, where special teams miscues tilted the balance.

With the playoffs approaching, Indianapolis must address these shortcomings to capitalize on their strong season. Bringing in a veteran special teams coach or signing an experienced kicker may be necessary to stabilize this area. Despite these concerns, the Colts’ resurgence in 2024 has been a testament to Steichen’s coaching and the team’s promising young core. If they can shore up their special teams, the Colts could be a legitimate contender come January.
