In Week 6 of the NFL season, the Detroit Lions’ running backs could be poised for another standout performance against the Dallas Cowboys. The Lions’ ground game has been a revelation this season, anchored by the dynamic duo of David Montgomery and rookie Jahmyr Gibbs. Their success could continue against a Cowboys defense that has shown vulnerabilities in recent games, particularly in stopping the run.
David Montgomery, the bruising veteran, has quickly become a key figure in Detroit’s offense. His ability to break tackles, gain tough yards, and find the end zone has given the Lions a consistent option in short-yardage situations. His physicality will be crucial against a Dallas front that, while athletic, can be overwhelmed by power running. The Cowboys’ defense, ranked in the middle of the league against the run, has struggled when teams commit to the ground game, allowing over 100 yards per game.
Jahmyr Gibbs brings a different dimension to the Lions’ attack. The rookie, known for his speed and versatility, can create mismatches in open space. Dallas has one of the most aggressive and opportunistic defenses in the league, led by Micah Parsons and Trevon Diggs. However, their focus on pressuring the quarterback and forcing turnovers can sometimes leave them vulnerable to well-timed running plays, draws, and screens—areas where the Lions have thrived. By controlling the tempo with their run game, Detroit can keep the Cowboys’ pass rush at bay and sustain long drives, keeping the ball away from Dallas’ explosive offense.
The key for Detroit will be balance. If the Lions can establish the run early, they’ll open up opportunities in the passing game for Jared Goff and the receiving corps, making the offense even more dangerous. With Montgomery’s power and Gibbs’ speed, Detroit’s backfield could once again be the driving force behind a big day on offense in Week 6 against Dallas.
