Report: The Houston Texans to re-sign Devin Singletary and add another RB

Devin Singletary Week 16 Preview vs. the Browns

There may be more than one running back in the Houston Texans’ game plan.

According to Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2, the team may look at a number of options this summer, including adding multiple running backs. Rather than spending big money on a single star like Josh Jacobs or Saquon Barkley, one of these options is to re-sign Devin Singletary, who will become a free agent, and pair him with another rusher.

After former starter Dameon Pierce underperformed in his second NFL season, Wilson said, “the Texans strongly desire to have two viable running backs.”

Wilson mentioned Tony Pollard of the Dallas Cowboys and D’Andre Swift of the Philadelphia Eagles as possible choices. Derrick Henry, a star for the Tennessee Titans, may be another, as the Texans were previously connected to him this summer. If one were to read between the lines in Wilson’s report, the Texans don’t seem like they would select a running back with their first picks.

Following the 2023 season, which saw the Texans rank 22nd in rushing yards and 29th in yards per attempt, Houston head coach DeMeco Ryans discussed enhancing the running game. For any team hoping to go deep into the postseason and for the development of a young quarterback, having a reliable running back is essential.

But Ryans thinks highly of Singletary as a player, so it makes sense to bring him back—as long as Houston brings in a complementary rusher to go with him. With 898 running yards and four rushing touchdowns, Singletary led the Texans in rushing.

After a disappointing second season, Pierce, a former 2022 fourth-round pick, is now doubtful of staying on the squad.
