According to a source on Thursday, the Arizona Diamondbacks and free-agent slugger Joc Pederson have reached an agreement on a one-year contract with a mutual option for 2025. Pederson’s signing will satisfy the team’s need for a middle-of-the-lineup bat.

Pederson will receive a guaranteed $12.5 million from the deal, which includes a $9.5 million salary for this year and a $3 million buyout of the $14 million option.

April will mark Pederson’s 32nd birthday. He had a mediocre season with the San Francisco Giants, hitting.235/.348/.416 with 15 home runs in 358 at-bats.

But his batted-ball statistics pointed to some bad luck in his performance, and he was coming off of an incredible season when he finished with a.274/.353/.521 line and 23 home runs. The two-time All-Star had a crucial role for the Dodgers in 2020 and the Braves in the following World Series as they won their respective titles.

Pederson has a career.834 OPS versus right-handed pitchers, so the Diamondbacks should have a formidable weapon against them. With a.622 OPS versus lefties, he has had difficulty.

Pederson spent the most of his Giants season playing at designated hitter. For the most part of his career, he has been regarded as a subpar defensive outfielder.

Buster Olney of ESPN broke the initial news on Thursday morning regarding the Diamondbacks’ interest in Pederson.
