What QPR need to do that will guarantee Championship safety.

With multiple teams vying to stay in the Championship, the relegation fight is heating up.

Birmingham City and a number of other teams in the division are presently engaged in a Championship relegation battle.

As we approach the latter quarter of the 2023–24 season, the team is struggling at the bottom of the table despite the positive vibe that has been around since Tom Wagner took control. They had been in the play-off spots in the first quarter of the season, but following the failure of the Wayne Rooney experiment, they are now fighting for their second-tier status.

Blues’ draw with play-off-chasing Hull City on Tuesday night has put them one point clear of the relegation zone. Stoke City, QPR, and Huddersfield are all on 38 points after their loss to Leeds United. There are just two points separating Plymouth Argyle, in 16th place, and Sheffield Wednesday, in 23rd place, in the league.

It does raise the question of what steps you might need to take this term to keep your league status. We’re reviewing the events of the past ten years to determine if additional points are required to remain up this term. These are our results…

Reading’s 41 points during the 2021–2022 campaign was the fewest points a club required to stay in the league. They were docked six points for breaking profit and sustainability criteria, but they still ended four points ahead of Peterborough United. The highest point total that a team in the twenty-first century has finished with and survived is Nottingham Forest’s 51. Due to goal differential, they defeated Blackburn Rovers by two goals in the end.

Teams have needed 46 points on average over the past ten years to guarantee their second-tier standing. With games remaining against all three of the bottom-three teams, Birmingham presently leads the league with 39 points and has 33 points to spare.
