At the expense of the Castleford Tigers, the Reds earned their first victory of the year.
Salford’s manager, Paul Rowley, said that Castleford gave his team a scare before their late comeback was unsuccessful in a 26–22 Red Devils victory. With his first try of the season, Nene MacDonald scored the best try on his Salford home debut, while Sam Stone added two and Amir Bourouh added the other to get Rowley’s team off to a good start.
Salford, however, held onto their lead throughout, as they went up 12-0 in just 13 minutes. However, Liam Horne’s late touchdown gave Castleford hope, and the hosts were made weaker by yellow cards for Jack Ormondroyd and then Kallum Watkins.
Rowley jokingly said, “I don’t know if you can feel grey, but I feel grey.” “I thought we had complete control of the ball at the beginning, and it would be nice if you could keep it that way, but Cas came back with a few tries that I believe were caused by individual mistakes.”
I felt we did quite well as a group. We should have been more tactful in our attack, though. We have several new hires in important roles. If we don’t refine our attack, it will always be a difficult battle. Although it’s not ideal for the ticker, we succeeded in the end.
Just before the half, MacDonald produced the highlight play, coming forward to steal a high ball from Marc Sneyd that was aimed at Luke Hooley, giving Salford an 18–10 lead at the half.
Rowley remarked, “I felt Nene was the shining star, the bit of quality on the pitch.” “Everyone puts forth a lot of effort, but that attempt was the ideal illustration of his different class.”
Sneyd was in charge the entire time and kicked three conversions before a late penalty that was vital in preventing Castleford from winning.
The 33-year-old “shows no signs of slowing down as he gets older,” according to Rowley. “We would be seriously lacking in direction if Sneydy were removed from our team today. He’s important to us and a class player who has been class for a long time.
