Prior to the start of the season, Salford—who have the lowest roster in the Super League—had an injury problem.

Head coach Paul Rowley of the Salford Red Devils has confirmed that his thin team would be at least one member short at the beginning of the season and has released an open call for fresh players. Due to his ongoing recovery from a wrist injury, Ethan Ryan, the Reds’ newest addition, will be absent from the team’s round one matchup against Leeds Rhinos.

There are now only 24 senior players available for Salford, making them the team with the smallest roster in the competition. Five more of Rowley’s players are now suffering with injuries, he said. While some of them might recover in time to play their Super League opener, others might not.

Rowley told Rugby League Live, “Ethan Ryan won’t be available.” “We’re awaiting the results of a few scans. All I can tell is that we most likely won’t have 23 players for round one, if we have 24 at all. I’ll be a happy man if I have 21 options.”

Before they travel to Headingley, Rowley believes the team will be able to bolster their roster. Having said that, he acknowledged that it was difficult to find players in January and, with just a few weeks remaining in the current campaign, he indicated the club was open to any and all proposals.

“Numbers are the key at the moment, but January isn’t the best time to go shopping for quality,” he stated. It’s challenging, but surprisingly, we’re not too stressed. However, expecting a 24-man squad to play the entire season is unfeasible.

“As a club, we are aware that we need additional members; we are facing challenges due to the measures and other issues, but we are determined to find a solution and there is a willingness to do so. Treat this as an advertisement; the club is looking for players in all positions and we may need a little bit of luck to find something.”
