Monday Buzz: Paul Gallen's hidden battle with depression

Paul Gallen expressed his surprise at the backlash he faced over a photo he posted online featuring himself and former Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison. The former Sharks captain shared a picture of the two enjoying lunch at Sea level restaurant on Instagram, unaware of Morrison’s divisive reputation. Speaking on Nine’s 100% FootyTM, Gallen described the reaction to his post as “crazy” and revealed that he had to block numerous people as a result.

“I’ll tell you what, I put it up on my social media and there’s a lot of people that don’t like ScoMo – I was shocked,” Gallen said. “It was ridiculous, I blocked a million people… it was crazy. It was nice to be with ScoMo, we had a good day.”

Morrison, a longtime Cronulla Sharks fan, recently stepped down as the club’s number-one ticket holder following his retirement from politics. Despite this, his lunch outing with Gallen has once again put him in the spotlight among rugby league fans. Cronulla has also been in the news for its strong start to the NRL season, with wins over the Warriors and Bulldogs. Star halfback Nicho Hynes currently leads the Dally M Medal leaderboard, adding to the positive momentum for the Sharks.

Overall, Gallen’s experience serves as a reminder of the polarizing nature of politics and the influence it can have on public perception, even in seemingly unrelated contexts such as sports.
