The Owls target free-agent who has already been at Middlewood Road

Sheffield Wednesday have now 'initiated contact' in bid to sign 'fantastic' striker - Sheffield Wednesday News

This summer, Sheffield Wednesday is thinking about making a move for a “excellent” free agent.

Sheffield Wednesday wants to start making summer transfer signings as soon as possible.

The transfer window is still a few weeks away, but Danny Rohl is already making preparations to strengthen his team. While the Owls are focused on securing new contracts for key players, they’re also scouting for fresh talent across various positions.

Reports have emerged linking Wednesday with Arsenal striker Mike Biereth, and now attention is shifting towards midfield reinforcements. With the departure of Tyreeq Bakinson, Momo Diaby, George Byers, and Jeff Hendrick this month, there’s a pressing need to bolster the midfield options.

Despite being open to paying transfer fees in the upcoming summer window, Sheffield Wednesday is also exploring opportunities in the free agent market. According to The Star, they’re in talks for a potential deal with Ovie Ejaria.

The midfielder was let go by Reading before Christmas and has since undergone training sessions with both Sheffield Wednesday and Plymouth Argyle.

Ejaria had a spell at Middlewood Road towards the latter part of the season with the potential of securing a permanent deal this summer, although it remains uncertain whether the transfer will materialize.

Who is Ovie Ejaria – the former Liverpool gem?

Ovie Ejaria kickstarted his professional career at Liverpool, where he debuted in 2016.

The midfielder had limited opportunities at Liverpool, featuring in only six competitive matches before being loaned out to Sunderland.

During his stint at Sunderland, Ejaria experienced relegation to League One before moving to Rangers. There, he made 28 appearances and scored in the Europa League.

Steven Gerrard, who was his manager at Rangers, expressed admiration for Ejaria, particularly praising his performance in their Europa League victory over FC Ufa in 2018. Gerrard commented, “I thought he was outstanding, and I believe that was his most impressive 90 minutes for us to date.”

“We’ve witnessed glimpses of his potential and some solid performances, but I believe this was the first time he truly shone against a formidable opponent. He maintained an excellent level throughout the game.”

Following his loan spells, Ejaria made a permanent move to Reading in 2020.

During his time at Reading, the 26-year-old contributed nine goals and 13 assists across 127 appearances for the Royals before his departure in December.

Ejaria has showcased his versatility throughout his career, featuring in various midfield roles, as well as on the wing and even as a center forward. Although he has played in multiple positions, the majority of his matches have seen him deployed in central or left midfield.

Should Sheffield Wednesday sign Ovie Ejaria

Ovie Ejaria was once seen as a player with great promise during his time at Liverpool, but his potential has since waned.

Since 2022, the former England U21 international has only made eight senior appearances, with his last start occurring 21 months ago.

Despite Reading facing significant challenges in recent years, it raises concerns why Ejaria struggled to secure a spot even in the lower ranks of League One.

For Sheffield Wednesday, banking on the potential Ejaria showed in the past might not be wise. While signing him on a free transfer presents relatively low risk, it feels like the type of signing the club would have pursued before Danny Rohl’s tenure began.
