Even though the Tennessee Titans are presently atop the quarterback depth chart heading into 2024, it’s unclear what will happen to starter Will Levis.
The only other signal-caller on the team is Malik Willis, a third-round selection in 2022, but after a difficult first two seasons in the NFL, the Liberty product is by no means guaranteed a spot on the field.
The fact that the Titans intend to recruit a quarterback to challenge Willis for the backup position, as stated by general manager Ran Carthon on Tuesday, makes his situation much more precarious.
We’re going to keep searching. We won’t enter training camp with just two quarterbacks because we have Malik (Willis) on staff, said Carthon, as reported by Sam Phalen of AtoZ Sports Nashville.
“We intend to add another quarterback to the mix at some point, either by free agency or the draft, and we expect all three of those players to compete and improve the environment.”We will combine various options to determine which one works best.
In light of the recent spate of injuries at the position across the NFL, which Titans head coach Brian Callahan personally witnessed while playing for the Cincinnati Bengals, having a capable backup who can weather the storm in the short term is more crucial than ever.
Over his first two NFL seasons, Willis has not proven he can be that player, and he has a real chance of leaving this team in 2024, though Tennessee might still carry him around as a backup quarterback in case he is not selected.
Although Carthon indicated that the Titans might acquire a new quarterback through the draft or free agency, I believe Tennessee will ultimately turn to the latter option.
