New York will be looking to add a new third baseman after a tough injury.

It appears that this offseason, the New York Mets will need to bring in a new third baseman.

Entering the summer, New York anticipated that promising young player Ronny Mauricio will be a key contributor in 2024. He joined the major leagues at the close of the 2023 campaign, and the organization anticipated that he would play a major role at third base the next year.

After suffering a damaged anterior cruciate ligament in his knee during a Dominican Winter League game, fans of the Mets will probably have to wait until 2025 to see him play once more. Now, Will Sammon of The Athletic reports that New York will try to sign a new third baseman.

“The expectation now is that the Mets will look at external options even though they have others who can play third base,” Sammon stated. It’s conceivable that the Mets look at trades in an effort to improve the position as well. Any newcomer would probably be more useful as an addition to their current roster.

“During a Dominican Winter League game, Mauricio hurt his knee while leading off first base. The 22-year-old, who was voted the league’s (Most Valuable Player) the previous year, was participating in the league for the fourth consecutive offseason. He used the winter to prepare for a strong Triple-A campaign that earned him a late-season promotion to the majors.”

One guy who could wind up making sense for the Mets in the summer is Matt Chapman, the former slugger for the Toronto Blue Jays. Although he has been suggested as a match several times, he would be a significant addition rather than a supporting role.

It would not be shocking if a shift were to occur, but it is too early to say. Should the Mets fail to acquire talents such as Yoshinobu Yamamoto or other starters like Blake Snell, perhaps they might redirect their attention towards acquiring a star, in which case Chapman would make sense.
