NRL 2021: Shane Flanagan linked to the Newcastle Knights, Adam O'Brien, CEO, Phil Gardner, Kalyn Ponga, Mitchell Pearce injury

Dragons head coach Shane Flanagan has delivered a straightforward message to Jack de Belin, who is currently without a contract for the upcoming seasons. Despite de Belin’s commendable performance for the team this year, Flanagan has emphasized that the decision regarding a new deal lies squarely with the experienced forward.

De Belin, aged 33, has showcased his skills on the field but is yet to secure a contract beyond the current season. It’s understood that he desires to continue representing St George Illawarra for at least two more years, although this might necessitate accepting a reduced salary.

Addressing the media ahead of Thursday’s match, Flanagan expressed his desire to retain de Belin at the club but stressed that it ultimately depends on the player’s ongoing contributions.

“I certainly hope Jack remains with us,” Flanagan remarked. “It’s a matter for the club to retain him, whether it’s for one, two, three, or four years – that’s entirely up to Jack. Consistent performance and good form are crucial factors. I won’t be pressured into making hasty decisions… I trust that matters will be resolved in due course.”

The team received a significant morale boost recently when Jaydn Su’A committed to a contract extension. Additionally, promising young talent Tyrell Sloan is on the verge of finalizing a two-year contract extension.

Flanagan was tight-lipped when questioned about the possibility of pursuing Blaize Talagi, a rookie from the Eels. With a subtle smile, he responded to reporters with a simple “no comment.”
