Since Brian Robinson Jr. entered the team in his second season, the Washington Commanders have witnessed significant progress.

The Washington Commanders have come a long way since Brian Robinson Jr. joined the squad in his second season.

“The ability to catch the ball, the ability to run routes – one of the things I challenged him on was being a complete player (on) first, second, and third down,” Jordan stated. Not just rushing after the ball and grabbing it, but also being able to defend. And in that regard, he has truly matured. When he was at Alabama, you really didn’t see it very much.”

Robinson is now a man the organisation can count on to help develop Sam Howell in addition to being a three-down back with the ability to run, catch, and protect his quarterback.

“This West Coast offence has always been running back friendly in terms of being able to get you targets and get you catches,” Jordan stated. “The biggest thing is knowing when to get out, being able to be a reliable outlet for the quarterback…just being where you need to be in the offence so a guy like Sam understands [that he has] his security blanket.”

For quarterbacks, particularly young ones who are under constant pressure as Howell has been this season, that comfort blanket skill can literally save their lives.

Robinson’s ability to help Howell gain that extra half-second or develop into an outlet receiver has shown throughout the season. While it may not always be reflected in the stat book, this ability has been crucial to Robinson’s, his quarterback’s, and even his play-caller’s development.

“I think it’s impacted my growth process a lot,” Bieniemy said of Robinson’s evolution within the offense. “But also too, I think we’ve helped one another. People like to put people in certain categories, he’s a running back, he just runs the ball now….(But) he’s become a guy that Sam can count on.

He’s made tremendous plays, not only in the pass game as a receiver, he’s made some huge plays in the run game, but also too, he’s done a heck of a job of stepping up in the pocket and knocking the hell out of some blitzing backers. So, I love the growth that he has shown, but also too, he’s helped me to grow because there’s certain things that I know that I got to do a better job of highlighting of him and just showing his strengths more.”

Unfortunately, Robinson’s season-long progress may have to wait another week as he recovers from a hamstring injury that has prevented him from participating in all or most of this week’s practices.

Coming out of Alabama, he was thought of as a power back with restricted receiving abilities, but he has already proven he is more than worthy of the hype.

He, Howell, and maybe his coaches together might be the next generation of talent Washington acquires to produce more successful football in the near future.
