David Fifita is standing by his demand to break his word and sign with the Sydney Roosters.

The prominent player from the Gold Coast shared today the emotional and physical strain he experienced following weeks of uncertainty about his future in the sport.

In his initial interview after the surprising decision that rocked rugby league, Fifita disclosed that he decided to stay with the Titans primarily because he wanted to give coach Des Hasler a chance and be close to his loved ones.

Earlier this month, Fifita turned down an option to extend his contract with the Titans for 2025, indicating he was likely to join either the Roosters or Penrith for a lucrative deal. However, just days after verbally agreeing to join the Roosters, Fifita had a change of heart, leading the Roosters to retract their offer.

Fifita has now chosen to activate his option to remain with the Titans for two more seasons, providing a significant boost to the club as it undergoes changes under the guidance of first-year coach Hasler.

Considered one of the top second-rowers in the NRL, Fifita surprised many with his decision after weeks of speculation about his contract status.

Reflecting on the ordeal, Fifita acknowledged the toll it took on him and his close circle, both mentally and physically, but expressed contentment with his final decision to stay with the Titans.

He emphasized the importance of honoring his commitment to Hasler and expressed confidence in the team’s potential under the coach’s leadership.

Fifita also cited his reluctance to leave behind his loved ones and relocate to Sydney as a factor in his decision. As a Queensland native, he felt a strong pull to be near his family and to prioritize his personal well-being.
