Despite the fact that Norwich City is now without a manager after firing David Wagner in the wake of the team’s 4-0 play-off loss to Leeds United, the club is still making recruitment moves.

Defensor Jose Cordoba is one of the players the team is vying to recruit, according to Bulgarian media site Gong. Having started 27 league games this season, the center-half has been an important member of the Parva Liga team.

The Panama international began his career in his home country, turning out for Independiente de La Chorrera before making the move across the Atlantic to mainland Europe, spending time in Celta Vigo’s youth system before making the switch to The Blues in 2021.

Although the report states that the Canaries are winning the race for the 22-year-old, they are not the only British club after his signature. Scottish Premiership runners-up Rangers are also interested in Cordoba. The defender has already visited Ibrox and is reported to have agreed personal terms with the club, however, he now views the prospect of joining a project at Carrow Road as a more appealing offer.

Norwich are expected to be in the market for defenders this summer, following the announcement that regular starter Ben Gibson and squad rotation option Danny Batth are both to leave the club following the expiration of their contracts next month.

Therefore, bringing in a player with both international experience. as well as continental competition experience following his side’s run in the Europa Conference League, could be the logical next step in building for the future. Any deal is reported to come at a cost of close to £3 million, but for a 22-year-old, the Norfolk outfit’s hierarchy could see this as a valuable investment in the project.

Norwich are at a crossroads now as they enter the final year of receiving parachute payments following their most recent relegation from the Premier League. The squad’s average age this season is 27-years-old, with their defenders often being on the higher end of that average, so a move such as this seems entirely reasonable if the club wish to push for a promotion back to the top flight this year.

That project is clearly a promising one if they are able to beat a top-division side like Rangers to an impressive player like Cordoba. Therefore, if the Canaries can get this one over the line this window, then it could constitute a real statement of intent for the campaign ahead.
