OG Anunoby is not guaranteed to be heading back to the New York Knicks after being traded away by the Toronto Raptors earlier this year.

It is said that OG Anunoby’s return to the New York Knicks is not guaranteed.

When the 26-year-old was traded by the Toronto Raptors earlier this year, it appeared certain that Anunoby would sign a new contract with the Knicks when he became an unrestricted free agent this summer. Not many teams would part with that much in a deal without some guarantee that Anunoby would be willing to resign, if not outright resign. It was also not lost on anybody since Anunoby’s agent, Sam Rose, is the son of New York president Leon Rose.

Apparently, though, it’s not that easy.

“There was word circling among team officials at last week’s NBA Draft Combine that Anunoby’s situation with the Knicks is not as cut and dried,” Jake Fischer of Yahoo Sports said. “Various teams left Chicago with the belief that Anunoby could reach unrestricted free agency and consider deals from other franchises in addition to New York, sources said.”

Toronto had traded Anunoby earlier in the season because of this anxiety, which was initially expressed by the organisation. Anunoby will significantly surpass this amount in free agency this summer. However, he was not allowed to sign a contract worth more than $117 million over four years due to limits in the collective bargaining agreement.

Anunoby’s future is uncertain if he chooses not to re-sign with New York. According to SNY’s Ian Begley, the Philadelphia 76ers are interested in chasing Anunoby this summer and have the cap flexibility to do so.

In the event that the organisation partes ways with Bruce Brown and Gary Trent Jr., Toronto may be one of the clubs with cap space this summer. The Raptors would thus have just under $30 million in cap room to work with this summer, but it won’t be enough to sign Anunoby, who will probably receive a contract with an annual value higher than that. To have any chance of pursuing Anunoby this summer, Toronto would need to figure out how to transfer Chris Boucher without having to pay him back.
