Luke Voit keeps rivalry fires burning for New York Yankees, Red Sox

In the Empire: Yankees updates – February 5, 24

The Orioles might be an AL powerhouse for many years to come; Anthony Volpe is building the groundwork for a breakout sophomore season; and the Yankees are positioned in the AL East as the hectic summer draws to a close.

New York Post | Greg Joyce: Anthony Volpe is poised for a pivotal sophomore season following a bright but uneven rookie campaign. Unlike last year, the shortstop knows he has the starting shortstop job all to himself going into 2024. However, he must now fill in the several gaps that periodically marred his 2023 performance. As he attempts to advance further this season, Volpe stated, “Just [working on] different things I felt like I did well and didn’t do well with consistency and stuff like that, trying to use all the resources and the organization.” Volpe’s integrity and determination have always been appreciated by the Yankees, so it wouldn’t be shocking if he harnessed those qualities to help him reach greater heights in 2024.

CBS Sports | Mike Axisa: Axisa offers a thorough State of the AL East to evaluate how the five teams compare as the winter draws to a close. When viewed this way, it’s evident that the Yankees were the only team in the division to have made significant moves prior to the Corbin Burnes trade. The Rays have persisted in their strategy of playing on the margins, the Red Sox have been extremely silent, and the Blue Jays have satisfied themselves with Justin Turner and Yariel Rodríguez after passing on Shohei Ohtani. After all of that, will the Yankees be able to take back control of the AL East?

New York Post | Joel Sherman: Is there a new Goliath in the AL? With key players aging or approaching free agency, the Astros’ reign of dominance may be coming to an end (hopefully?), but the Orioles are attempting to establish themselves as Houston’s heir apparent in the American League. The Orioles are about to start spending money to bolster their strong homegrown core, and the Yankees should be concerned about this development as the team is poised to be sold to two billionaires in private equity.
