What New England Free Jacks look to do after winning MLR title

Rugby is not a popular sport in the US, in contrast to football. However, the New England Free Jacks claim that playing and watching is equally enjoyable.

Rugby is a way of life for us back home in New Zealand, according to Thomas Grant, the Free Jacks’ academy and community head. “I think the opportunity to try and introduce a new sport to someone is just such a really cool challenge.”

“Once you comprehend it, you’re inside.” Then, as in football, you’re not missing anything because of the subtleties of the game,” Free Jacks head coach Scott Mathie stated.

Just one year ago, the New England Free Jacks took home the Major League Rugby championship. This season, they have devoted their first few games to expanding the sport. On Wednesday, they went to Suffolk University in Boston.

There are no pauses or starts, commercial breaks, or other interruptions. You may expect to be entertained for eighty minutes as it is currently running,” stated Mathie. It was crucial for us to assemble a staff that we felt had a connection to Boston before moving here. They’re all excellent labourers who can run and tackle for the entire 80-minute game.

Playing at Veterans Memorial Stadium in Quincy, the Free Jacks have an ever-expanding fan base.

According to Grant, “the city has really embraced us and allowed us to run more than just a rugby game.”

It’s similar to spending a day out enjoying plenty of beer and good music. You don’t even need to understand the rules of the game to have a fantastic time, according to Mathie.

In order to prepare for the 2031 Rugby World Cup and the 2033 Women’s Rugby World Cup, which are both scheduled to take place in the United States, Grant and Mathie stated that they hope to expand the sport in New England. The Free Jacks, however, are concentrated on winning another championship in the interim.

This Saturday, the Free Jacks take on Old Glory DC, one of their rivals, in Quincy.
