National media outlet names the biggest issue for Tennessee Vols after the completion of spring practice.

The Tennessee Volunteers’ offseason is officially in full flow, with spring practice over. Tennessee will enter the 2024 season as a strong contender for the new 12-team College Football Playoff. However, Tennessee’s new-look secondary must perform admirably. Tennessee has lost eight defensive backs to the NCAA transfer portal/eligibility this offseason. The good news for the Vols is that they added numerous transfer players who should be immediate contributions to UT. Tennessee also has several young defensive backs, notably true freshman safety Boo Carter, who should be able to make an impact for the Vols.

While there are lots of reasons to be optimistic about Tennessee’s secondary, 247Sports reports that it is also the program’s biggest concern this offseason. The national sports media organisation named each top 25 program’s biggest concern entering the summer, and Tennessee’s was the secondary.

Tennessee’s secondary might be the game changer for the Volunteers in 2024. If the secondary improves with a mostly new cast, Tennessee’s defence might make significant strides this season. However, if the new-look secondary struggles, the Vols’ defensive line will be put under additional pressure to play well. It will also increase the pressure on the offence to put points on the board. Tennessee is pleased with their secondary, but we won’t know if that confidence will transfer into production until the Vols take the pitch this fall.
