Monday Headlines: Mark Stoops reacts to NCAA ruling

For many of the program’s viewers, the latest information about Kentucky football’s 2021 season came as a big surprise. The 2021 season of Kentucky football has been canceled due to Level II breaches, as per an NCAA verdict, wherein 11 players received compensation for labor they did not perform.

Athletic director Mitch Barnhart and school president Eli Capilouto made statements almost instantly available to the media, but head football coach Mark Stoops remained silent.

Not until Stoops made the following statement over the weekend.

“There isn’t much I can say… I’ve been asked by the NCAA to keep quiet about it. I’m not going to avoid it. I’m very concerned about this season right now.

You can read the entirety of Stoops’ remarks here.

It’s interesting that Stoops was advised to refrain from commenting by the NCAA. Why? Probably never will we know. He does, however, raise an important point: the team’s 2024 season opening is in less than three weeks, and the verdict applied to games that were played three seasons ago.

This season, the head coach from the United Kingdom is giving it his best. With back-to-back 7-6 seasons and the 10-win season from 2021 now formally vacated, the club has “underperformed,” hence it is imperative that Stoops and his group have a strong season.

Kentucky’s upcoming schedule is quite demanding, including road trips to Texas, Florida, Ole Miss, and Tennessee. While it is great to have eight home games, Kentucky will still have to travel to South Carolina, Georgia, Auburn, and Louisville for four of those games.

Throughout the season, Southern Miss, Ohio, Vanderbilt, and Murray State are evenly spaced out, and Kentucky will be heavily favored in each game.
