Former Birmingham City manager Steve Bruce has revealed that he would like to return to management, amid talk that he could return to the club. West Bromwich Albion fired the 63-year-old in late 2022, and he hasn’t worked since. Bruce had spent the last 24 years in management. He has managed over 1000 games and has previously worked for Aston Villa, Hull City, and Sheffield United.

Between 2001 and 2007, he spent his longest and most successful time with Birmingham, when he was promoted twice to the Premier League. Interestingly, just this week, it was reported that the former defender was interested in a dramatic return to St Andrew’s. The Blues are now in a state of instability. They have had a terrible season, with no fewer than four managers coming and going. Gary Rowett was tasked with steering the West Midlanders to safety after incumbent manager Tony Mowbray was forced to take a medical leave of absence.

With relegation to League One guaranteed, it is uncertain whether the 60-year-old will return. This has spurred rumours that Birmingham are compiling a list of potential candidates, including the recently departed Hull manager Liam Rosenior. Bruce is alleged to be interested in the position and has informed the organisation that he would like to be considered. Regardless, he wishes to return to management. Speaking on talkSPORT, he said:

“For a long time, I believed this was exactly what I needed. I never truly took a break. “Unfortunately, I believe I’m getting under my nice lady’s feet! “And I am seeking to do anything, whether it is back in management or going back to work in some capacity; I am not sure yet. “But we’ll see whether the phone calls over the summer. But I surely would like to do anything.” Bruce managed 263 games during his first stint at the club, with a 38% victory rate.

Steve Bruce may need to return to League One to rekindle his career, and what better place to do it than with the club where he originally achieved success? Birmingham will be anxious to return to the Championship at the first opportunity, but they will quickly discover that the third tier is a very tough competition. Obviously, the preference is for Tony Mowbray to return. The former Sunderland manager is the best guy to lead the squad ahead, especially since he appeared to be headed in the right direction before being forced to take leave. However, if they are forced to make a change, a seasoned leader like Bruce may be the best option.
