Rene Maric, who left Leeds United in 2023 to join Bayern Munich, is scheduled to speak with Sunderland on the managerial opening.
HIGHLIGHTS
- Sunderland considering exciting young coaches, Rene Maric and Will Still, for management role after previous setbacks.
- Will Still leaves Reims, making him a more viable option for Sunderland; Maric also in the running due to coaching reputation.
- Both Maric and Still bring tactical expertise and fresh ideas to Sunderland, potentially guiding the young squad through the upcoming season.
Rene Maric, the ex-Leeds United assistant who is currently a youth coach at Bayern Munich, is being linked with the Sunderland managerial role.
The announcement follows the reappearance of ties to Will Still, but both coaches are known as dynamic young talent in the league. Following Tony Mowbray’s unexpected firing at the Stadium of Light earlier this season, it had been reported that Maric was also a target for Sunderland.
At the time of Mowbray’s departure, Sunderland was also well-documented to be interested in Will Still of Reims. However, this desire was swiftly dashed when a report surfaced from the French outlet Score.fr, stating that there was minimal likelihood of his quitting his post with the Ligue 1 team in December.
Managerless Sunderland now has a clear path to appoint Still after he left Reims, as the French team announced on their official website that Still has resigned from his position as head coach of the club. This comes six months after they lost out on their top target for a head coach. He will undoubtedly now emerge as a realistic candidate.
Although it has previously been indicated that any team interested in Still would have to pay roughly €5 million in compensation, since he won’t have a club until the start of next season, an agreement with Reims wouldn’t need to be made.
