OXBORO, Massachusetts On Thursday, the Patriots and Carolina Panthers will play their first preseason game.
How did they get ready for the week’s start? Who appeared prepared for gameplay? Who didn’t? Throughout practice, we jotted down a few names; several men stood out for different reasons.
Here are the biggest hits and misses of the day:
STUDS CB Gonzalez, Christian
Early in camp, Gonzalez hasn’t been nearly as sticky as many of us anticipated, but Monday was a positive step. He stopped two touchdowns that would have been scored, having a strong day in the red zone.

CB Shaun Wade Wade made the most of his extra reps during team sessions by putting away his red non-contact practice jersey.

During short-yardage drills, Wade almost intercepted a pass down the sideline. He also added a couple of victories during one-on-one sessions with the wide receivers.
EDGE White Keion
Despite White’s stellar performance at camp, the Patriots aren’t content to have him contribute solely to one side of the ball. During Monday’s red-zone team practice, he played fullback for a short while and scored a touchdown run by taking down linebacker Jahlani Tavai.

“We haven’t talked about it yet,” White replied, “but I for sure will give him (expletive) about it.”
DUDS TE Jaheim Ring
Bell did not show up for four workouts in a row before returning on Monday. How did he fare in his first practice with full pads? It can’t be good news for his prospects of making the roster that he didn’t, as he spent the entire competitive team exercise on the sidelines.
OT Caedan Wallace
Following his return to practice, Wallace was demoted to the second offensive line grouping, with Calvin Anderson starting at right tackle. Wallace may only have one chance to establish himself as a starter during the preseason, when it is anticipated that he will receive a thorough look at both left and right tackle.
QB Bailey Zappe Zappe was sacked on his lone drop back in the four reps he had, meaning he was deprived of the opportunity to complete a single (important) throw during competitive team exercises. During his extensive examination of team drills, Joe Milton III went 3-for-5, with one failure occurring on a drop.
