JUST IN: The Red Sox staff knows what the season’s remaining goals should be.

Although the Red Sox’s offense and speed thrill spectators, their pitching hasn’t been reliable since the MLB All-Star break.

Among those issues was Kutter Crawford’s ugly performance in Kansas City on Wednesday night. In three and a half innings, the right-hander allowed six runs on five hits in Boston’s loss to the Royals at Kauffman Stadium. Crawford let up a home run to bring his league-leading total to 27, walked three and struck out four batters.

While the Red Sox’s offense helped them escape with victories on Monday and Tuesday, manager Alex Cora realized that the pitching needed to be more reliable in order to avoid losing a lot of close games. Andrew Bailey, the pitching coach, was also aware that he had to accept personal accountability following Wednesday.

Bailey told reporters, “It doesn’t sit well with our pitching group,” according to Sean McAdam of MassLive. “And I’m pretty sure I can speak for the pitchers in there, we don’t want to have so many games where the offense has to dig us out of holes or have comebacks and then have to score again.”

Story continues beneath the pop-up.

Chris Martin’s return from the injured list gave Boston a boost, and on Wednesday night, the reliever struck out the side.

When the team kicks up a weekend series at Fenway Park against the Houston Astros, it will be looking to bounce back after a day off.
