In January, Wolves may sign  “immense” Nelson Semedo replacement.

Gary O'Neil admits 'fascinating conversations' with Matheus Cunha

The Wolves are considering a transfer for a gifted Brazilian.

Last Saturday, Wolverhampton Wanderers were dragged back to earth after suffering a crushing 3-0 loss against a team that had been playing in Europe only 72 hours before.

Gary O’Neil would have wanted his squad to capitalise on West Ham’s second match in as many days after winning against Burnley and drawing with Nottingham Forest, but it appeared like the Old Gold were fresh off a European match.

Even though the former Bournemouth manager has brought about some respectable development, the 2023–24 season has been marred by consistency issues, which will need to be fixed before 2024.

Could a few additions help the Molineux team, with the transfer window approaching soon?

Wolves transfer news – Defensive hunt

Wesley Franca, a current Flamengo defender, has reportedly had contact with Wolves’ agency as O’Neil looks to bolster his present team.
Financial Fair Play regulations prevented Barcelona from moving forward with their plans to recruit the young player, which may allow the Old Gold to move forward.

More positive news has arrived from journalist Vitor Beloti, who gave an update on his circumstances, stating that Wesley may leave Flamengo in 2024 after receiving inquiries from Brighton, Crystal Palace, and Wolverhampton.

“The English are holding off on starting discussions until the transfer window opens. Even Flamengo was informed by the full-back of his ambition to play in Europe.

The player will have competition from Brighton and Palace, so the next two weeks will be crucial in determining who makes the initial move.

With only 18 months remaining on his current deal, Wolves may be more inclined to make a bid for the 20-year-old Brazilian, especially as they might not have to pay top dollar.

Given how unreliable Nelson Semedo has been this season, the team really needs to reinforce their right-back position.

Wesley’s transfer would allow O’Neil to let go of the former Barcelona defender before his 2025 deal runs out.

Nelson Semedo’s statistics at Wolves

A wink to the Atlético The surprising image that published Semedo

“It’s not often that we have the opportunity to sign a world-class player from a world-class club,” said Jeff Shi, executive chairman of the Midlands team, when the 30-year-old signed for an incredible £36.8 million transfer fee back in 2020. Nelson’s signature demonstrates our unwavering development and our enduring hunger and humility.”

Semedo arrived with a winning attitude, having won two La Liga titles and a Copa Del Rey during his time in Spain. In his first two seasons, he made 64 appearances across all competitions, scoring twice, and it was a respectable start.

But Semedo didn’t do well under Bruno Lage and Julen Lopetegui last season. He was incredibly inconsistent, as seen by his terrible 21st place squad ranking for overall Sofascore rating in the top division. He also rated sixth for accurate passes (27.4), 16th for critical passes (0.3), and seventh for successful dribbles (0.7) per game.

In his 36 Premier League games, he only managed one assist, which was a poor performance for a fullback who enjoys bombing down the flank as frequently as he does.

The Portuguese defender has started every league game under O’Neil this season, which indicates that the 40-year-old has few choices at right back.

Wesley has had a fantastic season with the Brazilian team in 2023, thus a move for him might very well be high on his priority list.

After making a breakthrough into the Flamengo senior team during the summer, U23 scout Antonio Mango gave Wesley high marks. “I’ve been really impressed with Flemengo’s right-back Wesley França,” he remarked. Ever since joining the senior team, he has been phenomenal.

During the 2023 season, he made 51 appearances for the club in all competitions, and he was provided with an excellent platform to display his skills.
