Injury blow for Swindon Town as key man could be sideline for the rest of the season

Following an injury setback, Tom Clayton is “likely” to miss the remainder of the Swindon Town season, according to interim manager Gavin Gunning.

In 2022, Swindon Town made a move to reclaim the defender.

This season, Clayton, 23, has only made four appearances across all competitions, with three of those coming in League Two.

According to a report by the Swindon Advertiser, Gunning has given this update on his health: “Tom Clayton has had a setback, so he is going to be out again, which is very negative news.” [Will he miss the entire season?] Yes, it appears likely.

Swindon Town blow

Due to his previous injury issues, Clayton is keen to return to full health in time for the upcoming season.

He was brought in by Swindon a few years ago to strengthen their defence line, and during his first season in Wiltshire, he appeared in 34 games while scoring one goal.

This summer marks the expiration of his contract at the County Ground, and the fourth-tier team must make a significant decision on his future. As things stand, he is scheduled to become a free agent in late June.

Clayton came through the Liverpool academy’s Anfield ranks to become a product. Under Jurgen Klopp, he was a fixture for the Reds at both the Under-18 and Under-21 levels, but he never played in the first squad for the Premier League’s biggest clubs.

He was able to gain regular playing experience in the Football League the previous season thanks to his permanent departure to Swindon.

Unless they want to extend his tenure, he may have played his final game for the team due to his recent unfortunate string of ailments.

With nine games remaining, the Robins are ranked eighteenth in the table. They are 11 points outside of the playoffs and 14 points above the drop zone.

Gunning’s team returns to action this evening against managerless Accrington Stanley after suffering a 3-2 loss away to Mansfield Town last time out.
