Salford Red Devils face another setback in terms of injuries as a new addition is sidelined indefinitely.

Salford Red Devils coach Paul Rowley has provided an update on a key player in the club’s spine following their Super League Round One clash against Leeds Rhinos. The Red Devils suffered a 22-16 defeat against Rhinos in a close encounter at AMT Headingley on Friday night. And Rowley lamented the absence of one of his new signings who was unable to play due to injury.

The 48-year-old said: “Joe Mellor is injured. He’s got a lower limb injury so he’s not back for the foreseeable future. We’re without him and it hurts because he would’ve been playing tonight, but if we lose any player it hurts.

“We’re thin, there’s no doubt about that but like I say when you’ve got belief and character there’s no limit on what you can achieve and that will be our mantra going forward.”

Mellor – who signed for Salford from Leigh Leopards on a two-year deal last December – can play as both a scrum-half and a hooker. The 33-year-old has spent most of his career at Widnes Vikings, making more than 150 appearances for the club during their spell in Super League.

But the veteran was unable to make an impact for his new side as they gave Rohan Smith’s side a genuine scare in their opening clash of the 2024 season. Tries from Cade Cust and Oliver Partington, coupled with Marc Sneyd’s kicking, meant Salford were leading the game as late as the 66th minute. And Rowley was pleased with his team’s overall performance.

The former Leigh Centurions coach said: “I don’t think there was much in the game. I don’t think we were hanging in the game at all. I thought for large parts of it we were comfortable and controlling the game. I think our players felt really confident.”
