I’m Excited To Be Part Of The Toyota Cheetahs Project

Setback for rugby in the Free State as Cheetahs to get Pro 14 boot

Excitement brews as dynamic loose-forward Neel Volschenk prepares to make his debut for the Toyota Cheetahs this weekend in the SA Cup round seven clash against the Valke in Kempton Park.

Volschenk, among a select group of Shimlas Varsity Cup champions, has been diligently training with the team and is poised to take the field, likely in the role of 8th-man.

In a strategic move, Shimlas flyhalf Ethan Wentzel will accompany the squad to Kempton Park as player number 25, serving as a backup in case of injury or illness prior to the game.

Frans Steyn, the Director of Rugby at the Cheetahs, views this as a prime opportunity for the team’s newcomers. He applauds their infusion of energy into training sessions, acknowledging the challenges of transitioning from the EPCR Challenge Cup to the SA Cup. Steyn expresses hope that these rising talents will seize the moment and showcase the prowess of Free State rugby on a broader stage.

However, amidst the anticipation, the Cheetahs face a setback with the news of James Verity-Amm, the agile outside back, set to endure a significant hiatus due to a severe knee injury requiring surgery. While the team has welcomed back several players from injury, Verity-Amm’s unfortunate setback, incurred during the clash against the SWD Eagles in George, underscores the unpredictable nature of the sport.

As anticipation mounts, the Cheetahs prepare to take on their opponents at Barnard Stadium on Saturday, with kickoff scheduled for 15:00. It’s a momentous occasion for Volschenk and the team, as they aim to deliver a standout performance and uphold the legacy of Free State rugby.
