Hamilton Tiger-Cats agree to terms with promising defensive back.

Former Argonauts cornerback Jamal Peters signs futures contract with Falcons

American defensive back Jamal Peters has agreed to terms with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, and sources indicate that he is expected to sign with the team barring any unforeseen circumstances.

Peters is now the highest-paid defensive back in the CFL thanks to the Ticats.

The 27-year-old was with Atlanta at the start of the 2023 season, but was cut by the Falcons in June, a month ahead of training camp. Shortly after, he returned to the Toronto Argonauts, where in 13 games with the Double Blue, he totaled 32 defensive tackles, four interceptions, and two forced fumbles.

In 2022, Peters played boundary cornerback for the Argos, starting 15 games. He finished with 57 tackles, 6 interceptions, 1 sack, and 1 score, earning him a CFL all-star designation. In addition to starting the East Final and Grey Cup, he recorded eight tackles and one forced fumble to aid the Argos in their CFL title victory.

After signing with Toronto in February 2021, the Bassfield, Missouri native practiced for a while before making his professional debut in Week 2. During his eight games in uniform, he racked up 32 tackles and one interception.

The six-foot-two, 220-pound cover man played four years at Mississippi State University before going undrafted in the 2019 NFL Draft. As an undrafted free agent, he signed with the Indianapolis Colts, but he was released soon after after receiving a settlement for his injuries.

Peters was the fifth-ranked pending free agent by 3DownNation.

During the current window, which ends on February 11, pending free agents can negotiate with teams from all around the league. Players can reach an agreement on a contract for 2024 with a specific team, but these agreements aren’t enforceable and can’t be confirmed until after free agency begins on February 13.
