There’s still time for the Chicago Cubs to sign one or more of the top free agents that are available.
The Chicago Cubs took a swing at Shohei Ohtani but were unsuccessful. Maybe they didn’t make a generous enough offer? It certainly appears that way.
However, the Cubs have needs to be met and money to spend. And even though it’s mid-December, time is running short.
The Athletic released their list of the top 40 free agents earlier this year. Some, like Ohtani, have performed incredibly well. However, over half of the listed free agents are still available as of this writing.
Here are the five players that would be the best fit for the Cubs among the remaining free agents on the list.

Sometimes the decision is really simple — pay the devil that you know. Bellinger is looking for more than $200 million and if he produced as he did in 2023, then he’s worth the money. He can lock down center field, first base or even designated hitter. The 2023 Comeback Player of the Year is in demand. It’s time for the Cubs, if they really want him, to get a deal done.
