Carlton Palmer believes the prospect of joining Wrexham permanently is going to appeal to keeper Arthur Okonkwo as he prepares to leave Arsenal on a free transfer this summer.

After successful loan spells with Crewe and Sturm Graz, it was decided in the summer that Okonkwo would join the Red Dragons on their return to the Football League.

And, it’s a move that has worked out very well for Phil Parkinson’s side, as the 22-year-old has established himself as the number one for the Welsh side, featuring in 28 games this season.

League Two Table (As it stands March 20th)
Team P GD Pts
1 Mansfield 38 42 72
2 Stockport County 37 30 68
3 Wrexham 38 20 67
4 MK Dons 39 14 67
5 Crewe 38 12 64
6 Barrow 37 12 61

Thus far, the campaign has been successful because Wrexham is now in third place for automatic promotion.

Even if they lead MK Dons just by goal differential, Parkinson’s team will be cheering for the possibility of earning promotions twice in a row as the season draws to a close.

Arthur Okonkwo transfer latest

The remaining eight games of the current season will undoubtedly be the keeper’s primary focus, but after that, it’s unclear what Okonkwo’s future holds.

The stopper is out of contract with parent club Arsenal in the summer, and it has already been reported that he won’t be signing fresh terms, so he will become a free agent in the coming months.

Given his performances and potential, you would expect plenty of suitors to be keeping tabs on Okonkwo, and he could have a big decision to make on his next move.

Wrexham will surely be one of the clubs looking to sign Okonkwo permanently, and ex-England international Palmer made it clear that it would be a good fit for the youngster.

He told FLW: “He’s had a fantastic season and he’s still only 22. He’s kept 11 clean sheets in 28 matches this term, and he has been exceptional.

“Wrexham is an exciting project, they’re on the up and Okonkwo is getting regular game time. He’s been very good, very consistent and looks to have a bright future ahead of him.

“With the owners of Wrexham having deep pockets and plenty of ambition, I think they have every chance to sign him permanently. Of course, there will be other EFL clubs interested in him, but if you’re a player at Wrexham it must be an exciting time as they see how far they can go.

“They’re on the cusp of getting back-to-back promotions which would be incredible and for a young keeper this is perfect for him. I’m sure Wrexham can entice the keeper to sign a contract with them and to continue on that journey.”
