The Atlanta Braves thankfully beefed up their bullpen depth this offseason

The Atlanta Braves focused on bolstering their bullpen depth in the offseason, a wise move considering one of their key contributors may not be ready for Opening Day. Tyler Matzek, affectionately known as “Nutsack” among Braves fans for his memorable performances in the 2021 postseason, is recovering from Tommy John surgery in 2022 and has hinted that he might not be available at the start of the season.

Speaking to the media in North Port, FL, Matzek expressed optimism about his recovery but admitted uncertainty about his readiness for Opening Day. He mentioned the possibility of a rehab stint before returning to action.

While Matzek is following a normal throwing program with no restrictions, Braves manager Brian Snitker aims to prepare him for competition during spring training. If Matzek does begin the season on the injured list and makes rehab appearances in the minors, it would provide Atlanta with flexibility in their bullpen, as none of the projected Opening Day bullpen pitchers have minor league options.

The Braves must also consider recent MLB disciplinary actions against former New York Mets GM Billy Eppler for misusing the injured list, making them cautious about placing a reliever on the injured list unless absolutely necessary.

Regardless of the timeline, Matzek’s return to Truist Park, adorned with his new necklace, will be a moment of celebration for Braves fans.
