Emily Menges envisioned herself as a lifelong player for the Portland Thorns in the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL). After spending a decade with the team, this seemed to be a shared belief among many. However, things took a surprising turn when Bay FC, an expansion team, acquired the 31-year-old defender in a trade before the Expansion Draft.

“For years, I thought I’d be a one-club girl,” Menges shared in an exclusive interview with The Equalizer. “But honestly, this move has been amazing for me in so many ways.”

Only a few months into her tenure with her new team, the New York native expresses gratitude for the fresh experience, which has pushed her out of her comfort zone for the first time in over ten years.

Reflecting on her time with the Thorns, Menges admitted, “When I look back on the Thorns, I think at a certain point I had maybe stopped growing as quickly. I’m not sure if it was a comfort thing but I hit a plateau.”

As Menges navigates her new environment, with new teammates, facilities, and routines, she recognizes that she accomplished all she wanted during her time in Portland. She won championships, played alongside elite players, and fully immersed herself in the local culture, from enjoying the hikes to exploring the restaurants.

Now, this transition is offering Menges a fresh perspective and renewed growth, reigniting her passion for the game and challenging her in new ways she hadn’t experienced during her long tenure with the Thorns.
