One of the A-League’s most experienced players has recommitted to Melbourne City for another season, but the club has parted ways with a championship-winning defender.
Veteran goalkeeper Jamie Young has decided to extend his career by at least another season by signing a new one-year contract with Melbourne City.
The 38-year-old, who has previously won titles, made 38 appearances across all competitions for Melbourne City during their 2023-24 season after joining from Western United in July of the previous year.
“I’ve enjoyed my time playing for Melbourne City, and when the club approached me about re-signing, I knew it was the right choice,” Young said. “I’ve always aimed to play as long as I can and at the highest level possible, and at City, I can achieve that.”
Young began his domestic career in 2014 with Brisbane Roar after spending 12 years in the UK. Since then, he has played 260 games across all competitions for three A-League clubs.
Michael Petrillo, City’s football director, praised Young’s “leadership” and “experience.”
“On the field, Jamie is an outstanding shot-stopper and has been one of the best in the league for many years,” Petrillo stated.
“Equally important is what he contributes off the pitch. He consistently upholds the highest standards,” Petrillo added. “He is an excellent mentor and a role model for his younger teammates.”
However, while Young is staying with City, Portuguese defender Nuno Reis is leaving the Melbourne club he joined in January 2021.
“It’s a bittersweet feeling to leave a club where I’ve created so many fond memories,” said Reis, who won a championship and three premierships with City. “This has been the best squad I’ve been part of in my career, and it’s been amazing to be involved in such a successful era.”
In other news, Brisbane Roar have confirmed the signing of former US youth international defender Marcus Ferkranus. As reported by News Corp Australia last month, the 21-year-old Ferkranus will join the Roar from Los Angeles Galaxy, where he played for Ventura County, the Galaxy’s reserves team, in the MLS Next Pro competition.
Ferkranus, who spent part of his childhood in Queensland, will not occupy a visa-player spot in Brisbane’s squad as his mother was born in Sydney.
“I’m very excited to be coming to play for the Roar, and I’m ready to give everything to this club and for these fans,” Ferkranus said. “This was the first professional club I watched live as a young kid growing up here, and it means so much to me to come back and fight for this badge.”
